Attorney Profile - Chris Sloan:
I am from Muncie, Indiana, where I grew up as the oldest of eight children in a close-knit Catholic family. My journey into the world of law was far from conventional. In my grade school years, I took on a newspaper route, diligently waking up at 5:00 a.m. every morning. My work ethic continued to evolve when, in middle school, I started my own lawn business that I successfully operated throughout my college years.
I pursued higher education at Ball State University, all the while maintaining my dedication to hard work. My free time was spent volunteering as a news reporter for the Ball State Daily News, honing my communication and investigative skills. But it was my unique exposure to the legal world that ultimately ignited my passion for becoming an attorney. In Muncie, I was fortunate to have a close connection to a family that ran a law firm that primarily represented defendants in criminal cases. It was their approach of working closely with clients and meticulously developing cases for trial that provided me with valuable insights into the legal profession.
My interest in law deepened in 1998 when I had the opportunity to report on a groundbreaking trial held in Muncie. It involved Phillip Wiley, who had lost his wife, Mildred Wiley, a non-smoker, to lung cancer allegedly caused by second-hand smoke. This case marked the first-ever second-hand smoke lawsuit. While covering the trial, I had the privilege of meeting Ron Motley, the plaintiff’s attorney, who was renowned for his work in asbestos and tobacco cases.
Motley’s commitment to justice and his unwavering dedication to his clients was truly inspiring. He graciously shared his insights and connected me with key witnesses in the case for interviews. Despite the jury ruling in favor of the tobacco companies, the experience solidified my resolve to pursue a career in law.
In the year 2000, I embarked on my legal education journey at Oklahoma City University School of Law, eager to put my passion into practice. During my time in law school, I volunteered with the Oklahoma County District Attorney’s Office DNA Project in 2022 and interned with the Oklahoma County Public Defender’s Office in the appellate division, all while diligently taking summer classes to graduate a semester early.
In 2004, I took a significant step by establishing my own law office in Oklahoma City. Over the next 16 years, my firm earned a solid reputation for trustworthiness and reliability, handling both civil and criminal cases. I often found myself in courtrooms five days a week, gaining invaluable courtroom experience.
In 2018, I pursued the path of running for the position of judge, successfully navigating a competitive primary election, even though I did not secure victory in the general election. This experience taught me valuable lessons about the legal profession and the intricacies of public service.
My legal practice has been characterized by a diverse range of experiences, from pretrial proceedings to jury and bench trials, and even appeals. With my team, I successfully managed over 3,000 cases, recovering millions of dollars for our clients in civil matters. However, in early 2020, my journey took an unexpected turn when I contracted COVID-19 and had to be hospitalized. After careful consideration, I made the difficult decision to close my Oklahoma City office while ensuring that I diligently resolved every pending matter for our clients.
Subsequently, I relocated to Houston, Texas, where in August 2023, I proudly established my own firm, RealDamages PLLC. What sets me apart from most attorneys is my extensive courtroom experience, which empowers me to effectively advocate for personal injury clients. I am licensed to practice law in three states: Texas, Oklahoma, and Washington.
I recognize that my clients often find themselves in the midst of life’s most challenging moments when they contact my office, and it is my unwavering dedication to provide them with the legal support and representation they need to navigate these difficult times. With a strong belief in transparency and open communication, I invest time with potential clients to explain the merits of their case and ensure they understand how the law may apply to their unique circumstances.
Working through a set of facts can be challenging, but it is a necessary process to represent our clients properly. My commitment is not about me or my office; it is about our clients, having their best interests at heart, and genuinely caring about their well-being.
